Every bridal couple always look for fun and innovative ideas to make their wedding day stand out from the rest, whether it be an unconventional first dance, something different with their pictures or unusual wedding favours. Below are some out of the box ideas which can give you some food for thought.

Many couples do a spoof first dance, such as a slow dance and into something choreographed or a fast, upbeat song into something more fitting for their vibe. A traditional first dance is absolutely fine if this is what you want but if you want something different take a look on YouTube, Instagram or TikTok for inspiration and you can find some wonderful ideas or get inspiration for something unique.

I recently did a wedding where they wanted pictures taken with every table and of course, we could go to each table and get some posed shots but wanted to do something different for them. I got the couple to sit on chairs in the middle of the venue and asked the guests to form a ring around them. I got the DJ to play music and asked each couple or table to run in behind them and I took some shots and they moved on. It was like a constant moving circle so people could come back for more pictures if they wanted more with a different group of people. This was great fun and something different, which the couple absolutely loved.

When taking photographs, I always get a shot list from my clients beforehand, so I know what they expect from me and what they want from the memories of their day. I am a massive advocate for a candid shot and believe this is where some of the best pictures come from as they are unposed and more natural and show people’s true selves a lot better than a posed shot, but equally, if you choose the right settings for your posed shots and make your subjects feel comfortable, you can also get some brilliant images.

Don’t get me wrong, I am firm with large groups, as you have to be, as otherwise it’s like herding cats, but I am a fun and relaxed photographer who finds that if you are calm and less strict and formal, this puts your clients at ease.

Finally, wedding favours are something which can make or break the atmosphere of the guests’ tables, especially if they don’t know each other very well. At my wedding, we had pin badges made up or me and my husband in Lego format with our wedding date on them, which went down a storm, along with some icebreaker cards which encouraged the guests to find out more about their neighbours and get to know each other better. At another wedding I did, they had a storyboard for each table with slightly different scenarios on each, with gaps for you to fill in blank words. This was hilarious and the entire room was filled with laughter.

It is things like this which set apart your standard wedding from the outstanding wedding and will have people talking about it for years to come.
